Hartley is finely detailed, and tenderly made of soft artificial velvet with chestnut plush hair, a stitched mouth and eye-brows, black glass eyes and hand-painted freckles. He wears a velveteen hat (with two ladybird buttons), a strawberry-printed cotton shirt, linen rompers, knitted socks and felt boots. Hartley clasps a plate of felt strawberries. He is designed to sit – on a log, shelf or anything that comes to hand.
